Tips for drinking less
When it comes to cancer risk, there is no safe level of drinking. You can reduce your cancer risk by drinking less alcohol.
Why not try some of these ideas to reduce how much you drink?
- Have alcohol-free days each week
- Keep the house alcohol free
- Catch up with friends for a coffee rather than an alcoholic drink
- Meet friends to play games or sports, or go walking rather than going to the pub, club or bar
- Tell people early if you are not planning to drink alcohol and opt out of rounds of drinks
- Take on a personal challenge such as Dry July to stop drinking for a month
- Find other ways to unwind (see our suggestions below)

- Drink water to quench your thirst
- Sip alcoholic drinks slowly
- Alternate alcoholic drinks with a glass of water
- Set yourself a limit and stop once you’ve reached it
- Wait until your glass is empty before topping it up to keep count of your drinks
- Switch to lower alcohol varieties or dilute alcoholic drinks with soda or mineral water
- Eat while you drink to slow your drinking pace
- Avoid salty snacks that make you thirsty
