Campaign with Cancer Council
Every year in NSW alone, more than 48,000 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed. The impact on families, carers and communities is significant.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. There is much that we can do, together, to reduce the incidence and burden of cancer. We can raise valuable funds for cancer research. We can volunteer in our local communities. And we can call on decision-makers, including governments, to deliver better policies and programs.
CanAct is a community of thousands of advocates with the passion and power to change what politicians do about cancer.
By helping communities identify issues that matter to them, together we develop campaigns aimed at creating changes in the system to reduce cancer risks and improve services for everyone in NSW. We work together with community members, local cancer networks and our staff across NSW to develop, implement and promote these campaigns.
In the past, the CanAct community has successfully advocated for successive governments to:
- increase funding for palliative care services;
- abolish chemotherapy co-payments;
- protect the community from e-cigarettes;
- introduce smoke-free outdoor areas;
- improve sun protection policies for primary schools;
- ensure cigarettes are out of sight in retail stores;
- increase funding for bowel cancer screening; and
- ban commercial solariums.
Our dedicated campaigning website is an easy way for people to find out information and news on our advocacy campaigns, training and events and provides them with tools to take action on issues they care about.
You can also read about our successful past campaigns to see how we’ve made a difference to our communities.
Join our CanAct Community and we will send you regular campaign updates via email and opportunities to get involved – from easy actions like writing emails and attending events through to engaging with the media and perhaps meeting with your local MP.
Whether that’s by telling your story, lobbying decision makers or mobilising others – advocacy is one of the ways Cancer Council NSW is working towards our vision of a cancer free future.
