The SunSmart Student Studio Challenge
Cancer Council NSW is challenging students across NSW to get creative and help make sun safety matter to other young people.
This is an opportunity to shift sun safety from something adults tell young people about, to something young people have a voice in shaping and communicating themselves.
Sun safety messages are everywhere, but not all of them land. Adults can explain what to do, but students are best placed to work out how to make it actually matter to someone their own age.
We want to see how you would get other students thinking about sun safety.
Your entry should demonstrate an understanding of sun safety and communicate a clear SunSmart message in a way that’s relevant and engaging for other students.
There’s no need for fancy equipment or professional production. We’re looking for strong ideas, creativity and a message that connects with your peers.
Choose your format
Bring your SunSmart idea to life in the format that works best for you. Choose from a poster, story, comic or character design.
We’ve created simple templates and guides to help you get started. These are optional and are there as a guide only. You’re welcome to create your entry in your own way. Each resource includes entry requirements and tips to help bring your idea to life.
Poster
Create a poster that makes a SunSmart message stand out and gets other students thinking about sun safety.
Use words, illustrations, graphics or a combination of these to communicate your idea.
Story
Tell a short story that brings a SunSmart message to life for other students. You could use characters, humour, an everyday situation or an imaginative scenario to get your message across.

Comic
Tell a SunSmart story using a series of comic panels. Draw a different part of your story in each box and use speech bubbles, captions or text to show what your characters are saying, doing or thinking.
Your drawings can be simple line drawings or coloured illustrations – we’re interested in your idea, not your drawing skills.

Character Design
Create an original character that helps bring a SunSmart message to life for other students.
Your character could be a person, creature, superhero or something completely unexpected. Think about who they are, what makes them memorable and how they could help other students think differently about sun safety.
Give your character a name and catchphrase, and include a short description explaining who they are and how they help students stay SunSmart.

Before you get started
Whichever format you choose, your entry should:
- Communicate a clear and accurate SunSmart message.
- At a minimum, this should reference the five forms of sun protection (Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide) and that protection is needed when the UV Index is 3 or above.
- Respond to the SunSmart Student Studio challenge.
- Be creative, original and relevant to other students.
- Be easy for your intended audience to understand.
- Follow the requirements outlined in your chosen format template.
- Include a title for your entry.
Remember: entries are judged on the strength of the idea, not production value.

Ready to enter?
Once your entry is complete, ask a parent or guardian to submit it on your behalf via the online entry form. If you’ve used one of our entry templates, they can scan the QR code on the template to access the submission form.
