Improve your long game is Cancer Council NSW’s free sun protection program, targeting male golfers aged 40+ in NSW golf clubs. The program aims to improve sun protection behaviours of golfers by providing free sunscreen at the first and 10th tee and information and resources for reducing skin cancer risk.

Since it started eight years ago, Improve your long game has made a positive impact. Our research shows that male golfers 40+ at participating clubs are more likely to know the risk of skin cancer and use sun protection than men at non-participating clubs.

Skin cancers caused by UV radiation

Evidence shows men generally have poorer sun protection behaviours than women, particularly when playing golf.

Golfers are at higher risk of developing skin cancer due to factors such as:

  • long periods spent outside in peak UV times
  • limited shaded areas on golf courses
  • many surfaces (grass, sand and water) reflecting UV radiation
  • less emphasis on sun protection, compared to cricketers with their zinc, wrap-around sunnies and broad-brim hats.

Your questions

No, the program is free to all golf clubs in NSW.

We offer free resources to participating golf clubs, including:

  • two metal sunscreen stands for the 1st and 10th tee (contact us if your club has 27 holes)
  • 1L pump packs of Work SPF 50 dry touch sunscreen for the metal sunscreen stands
  • sun protection posters and brochures to display in the clubhouse and pro shop
  • promotional videos and digital resources to show within the clubhouse and pro shop, and/or share via social media.

You can access digital materials or order resources on our Resources page.

Improve your long game, like sun protection is year-round, so once your program materials are received you can start displaying them immediately.

You can order resources by completing an online order form.

Resources are typically delivered to clubs within 10 business days. However, during high-volume periods, delivery may take up to four weeks.

You will receive a notification via email when your order is on its way to your club.

If your club requested stands and/or supporting printed materials (i.e. posters, flyers), these will be sent to your club direct from our supplier. If you don’t receive your order within the specified timeframe, please us via improveyourlonggame@nswcc.org.au or (02) 9334 1761 and we’ll follow it up.

Due to the high COVID-19 vaccination rates across NSW, clubs may allow communal access to sunscreen via the stands on the 1st and 10th tee. As with other frequently touched areas and surfaces around the club, we recommend cleaning the sunscreen pumps regularly with disinfectant solution or wipes to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
