What type of gifts can my client leave?
- A percentage of their estate or residual gift: Once they have looked after their loved ones, gifting a percentage or share of their estate can make a lasting impact for future generations.
- A specific amount of money
- Specific item: Anything of value such as property, shares, jewellery, art of any other personal item of value.
What wording do I need?
Cancer Council NSW suggests the following wording for Wills:
‘I (insert name here) of [address], [occupation] bequeath/ GIVE to The Cancer Council NSW ABN 51 116 463 846 for its general purposes (or name a specific purpose*, such as research, patient and support care services, cancer prevention programs)
[Choose and insert the statement from the list below that reflects wishes]
- the whole of my estate
- (insert number) percentage of my estate
- the residue of my estate
- the amount of $ (insert the value of your gift in cash)
- my (insert name of asset), free of all duties, and the receipt of the Secretary or other authorised officer for the time being shall be a complete and sufficient discharge for the Executor(s).’
Words in italics to be adjusted in accordance with testator’s wishes.
*Our preference is for gifts to be left for general purposes as this enables us to spend the gift across any of our programs and reduces the administration costs associated with quarantining for specific purposes. However, we will always respect the wishes of our supporters and will be happy with whatever your client decides.

For example, thanks to gifts in Wills and donations, the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine was developed in Australia, which is now preventing thousands of deaths and is expected to help eliminate cervical cancer in Australia by 2035.

Who does my client notify of this decision?
Cancer Council NSW encourages supporters to inform their loved ones of their decision to leave a gift in their Will. If they are comfortable, we also encourages supporters to let us know so that we can thank them and record their wishes.
