A gene that makes a protein which plays a critical role in controlling cell division and cell death.
Mutations (changes) in the p53 gene may cause cancer cells to grow and spread in the body. p53 is one of the most commonly mutated genes across many types of cancers and is a type of tumour suppressor gene.
