An internationally recognised pioneer in women’s cancer prevention and a global leader in translational epigenetics, Professor Martin Widschwendter will guide the Daffodil Centre into a bold new phase, strengthening NSW’s position as a world leader in precision cancer prevention and advancing research that delivers meaningful, long-term benefits for communities.
Following specialist training in Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Austria, Professor Widschwendter joined the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 2001, where he trained with pioneers of cancer epigenetics, Professors Peter A. Jones and Peter A. Laird. Alongside his clinical work as a breast cancer specialist and gynaecological oncology surgeon, he founded the Women’s Cancer Translational Research Centre at University College London (UCL) in 2005. He later became Head of the Department of Women’s Cancer at the UCL Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Institute for Women’s Health, leading efforts to integrate molecular biomarkers into clinical pathways for breast and gynaecological cancer prevention.
While retaining his professorship at UCL, Professor Widschwendter founded the European Translational Oncology Prevention and Screening (EUTOPS) Institute at the University of Innsbruck in 2020 and also held a Guest Professorship at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.
Under Professor Widschwendter’s leadership, the Daffodil Centre will continue to shape cancer control policy and accelerate precision prevention strategies aimed at transforming cancer outcomes for future generations.
