The New Year is a busy time for job seekers. According to the US career site, CareerBuilder, one of the top New Year’s resolution is to find a new job. So when the clock struck midnight on 31 December 2015 and you set a resolution to change careers, move up the corporate ladder, or find a job with better work life balance – you were not alone.
But have you considered volunteering as an option? By offering your time and skills to a charity like Cancer Council NSW, you can help make a difference to people’s lives and at the same learn new skills and gain valuable work experience to land the perfect job.
There are a range of volunteer roles requiring different time commitments, from full-time internships, to volunteering just one morning or afternoon a week, to being involved in one of our key events and activities.
We have volunteer roles that don’t require previous experience or specialist skills, for example if you would like to help at one of our events or try your hand at fundraising. But we also have roles that will allow you to utilise and improve your professional skills. In the past, graphic designers, lawyers, journalists, business analysts, dietitians, video producers, accountants, trainers and facilitators, to name a few, have contributed their time and skills to Cancer Council NSW.
Cancer Council NSW relies on volunteers to help us do what we do. In 2014/15, thanks to the support of our volunteers, over 1,000 families received $2.2 million worth of free assistance from legal, financial services and human resources professionals; 574 Eat It To Beat It healthy eating sessions were delivered to parents in NSW primary schools; chemotherapy co-payments were abolished by the NSW Government as a result of our community campaigning in the lead-up to the NSW State Election on cancer issues; and 53 Relay for Life events across the state brought together 36,500 participants to remember loved ones, celebrate survivors and support each other. None of it would have been possible without the 27,000 people who volunteered their time last year.
So if you’re passionate about helping others or looking for opportunities in the NFP sector, volunteering at Cancer Council NSW will give you great insight.
Most importantly, volunteering is a lot of fun, it’s a great way of meeting people, and by helping Cancer Council NSW, you are helping to make a difference to the lives of so many cancer patients and their families.
So this New Year, volunteer with Cancer Council NSW and help achieve our vision that Together we will beat cancer.
