Introduction

This information has been written for women who have had all or part of a breast removed because of cancer, and are thinking about getting a breast form (prosthesis).

Many people feel understandably shocked and upset when they are told they have breast cancer, and need a mastectomy or breast conservation surgery. For many women their breasts symbolise many things: femininity, sexual attractiveness and motherhood. They may influence her body image and self-confidence. It’s no wonder losing a breast can affect how you feel about yourself.

This information is intended to help you understand what a breast form is, the different types available, and how to choose and look after a breast from. In this information we have used the term breast forms. Many retailers and professionals are also starting to use this term. If you come across other words that you don't understand, see the section What does this word mean? for definitions of some common medical terms.
