The Registers were set up by The Cancer Council NSW in 1990 to help families with hereditary cancer conditions. The Registers provide information and support to people affected by hereditary cancer, their at-risk family members, and their doctors.

The conditions covered by the Registers include:

  • FAP (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis)
  • HNPCC (Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer)
  • Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome
  • Juvenile polyposis
  • Other Polyposis syndromes (i.e. Hyperplastic, Cowden's Syndrome, Mixed Polyposis)

What do the Hereditary Cancer Registers do?

  • The Registers aim to assist people from families with a high risk of hereditary cancer to understand and manage their risk.
  • Joining the register can help to build a complete picture of the condition in a family.
  • The Registers also help develop our knowledge about the incidence of hereditary cancer conditions in NSW and ACT and contributes to better information, services and support for patients and their families.
  • People from high-risk families are encouraged to join the Registers. Registered members have the opportunity to take advantage of our information and screening expertise.
  • Registration is voluntary: just complete a consent form with a doctor or genetic counsellor.
  • The personal details provided to the Registers are confidential and are not discussed with any other person or organisation without permission.
