Information for Applicants
The Cancer Council NSW has developed a new and innovative granting scheme, known as Strategic Research Partnership (STREP) Grants, to encourage groundbreaking clinical research teams to partner with us to identify, publish and procure cancer research priorities. Through these Strategic Research Partnership Grants we hope to develop highly effective translational research groups and accelerate the progress of policy and practice focused research on cancer in NSW.
For the purposes of these STREP Grants The Cancer Council uses the following definition, which has been modified from the definitions of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre and the National Cancer Institute Translational Research Working Group.
Translational research:
- transforms scientific discoveries arising from laboratory, clinical, or population studies into applications to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality
- feeds back observations from clinical and public health practice into the development and direction of more basic research
The Cancer Council is open to further interpretation of translational research from prospective applicants.
In 2006, The Cancer Council funded three inaugural STREP Grants to support research into colorectal, hereditary and pancreatic cancers. It is therefore unlikely that new STREP Grants will be funded in these specific areas.
Expressions of Interest will only be considered from:
- groups whose research and service will be focussed on patients affected by a particular form, or closely related forms, of cancer.
- groups that are inherently multidisciplinary, i.e. they routinely entrain a range of clinical and research disciplines in research and problem solving.
Strategic Research Partnership Grants offer opportunities for research teams that have a strong commitment to research, that have demonstrated their potential to undertake high quality scientific research, have an ability to identify the pressing questions that need to be answered for improving patient outcomes, and have some existing capability in practice focussed research and practice innovation.
Strategic Research Partnerships will be funded for five years from January 2008 and will proceed in stages.
Stage 1 will consolidate and procure critical capacity in the teams that are successful in this application round, and support a core research agenda undertaken by the team. The funds committed to this stage should be limited to a guideline maximum of $250,000 annually over the life of the program.
Stages 2 and 3 will be concerned with identifying high priority research objectives and expanding funding and procurement to support research towards these objectives.

Consumer Review
The Cancer Council NSW believes it is important that researchers and the community value the research it finances. Since funding for external research is primarily resourced from donations from the general public, striking a balance between funding research that has significant scientific merit, and research that is especially relevant to the community will help ensure that The Cancer Council NSW responds to the genuine requirements of the community that finances it.
Full Applications must be accompanied by a completed Consumer Review Form. Information and guidelines to assist applicants in completing the Consumer Review Form are available in the Consumer Review Guidelines document.
