A tan represents skin damage. The skin has become brown in response to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Even when there is no peeling or redness, there is still cell damage, which increases cancer risk. People with dark skin that tans easily have some natural protection against UV radiation. Nevertheless, activities like sunbathing and not using sun protection when UV levels are high will still damage their skin and increase their risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.
It is a myth that it is safe to tan as long as you don’t burn or that a light tan is a sign of good health. There is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan.
