Smoke-free public areas

2011-2012

We should all be able to use and enjoy public spaces without compromising our health. Our Clear the Air campaign helped make this a reality. In 2012 the NSW Parliament passed legislation banning smoking in public areas including children’s playgrounds, sporting fields, covered bus shelters, taxi ranks and outdoor dining areas. After staged implementation, the final reforms took effect from mid-2015.

Our CanAct Community used the 2011 pre-election period to contact MPs and show them that smoke-free areas would be welcomed by the community. After the election, they kept this issue on the agenda by collecting more than 12,000 signatures for a hard copy petition and by meeting with MPs across the state. The campaign was also officially supported by the Local Government and Shires Association of NSW (LGSA) and many individual councils wrote to the Minister for Health urging her to enact legislation.

This win helped create a healthier environment for us all and means we can enjoy a meal outdoors without a side of smoke.
