When people are in the final stages of their cancer journey, they deserve the best possible care and support.
Unfortunately, NSW urgently needed extra specialist palliative physicians, palliative care nurses, and culturally appropriate palliative care services for Aboriginal people, to ensure that more people with a life-limiting cancer could access palliative care when and where they needed it.
So Cancer Council and the CanAct community delivered the I Care for Palliative Care campaign. Together, we secured thousands of pledges and endorsements of support, collected and shared stories about lived palliative care experienced, hosted local campaign launch events, secured hundreds of items of media coverage, and met with most of the MPs across NSW.
In response to this campaign, and the independent Push for Palliative campaign, in the lead up to the 2017-18 State Budget the NSW Government committed to invest an additional $100 million in palliative care over a four-year period.
This additional investment will go a long way to ensuring more people with a life-limiting cancer across NSW will receive the palliative care when and where they need it.
