In February 2012, Cancer Council responded to the National Health and Medical Research Council on the draft Australian Dietary Guidelines and Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.
Australians are bombarded with healthy eating information in the mass media and other sources that is often not evidence-based. Australians need credible, reliable and evidence-based nutrition information to assist them to make healthy food choices, and the Dietary Guidelines provides this.
This submission provides recommendations on improvements to the Dietary Guidelines and Australian Guide to Healthy Eating in terms of catering to diverse populations groups, including low-literacy, Indigenous and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups. This includes recommendations on communicating and marketing the new guidelines and ensuring that all consumer materials are tested with the target audience.
