Fruit 'n' Veg Fundraiser

Eat It To Beat It has teamed up with a local fruit and vegetable wholesaler, to deliver a healthy fundraising option to Hunter schools. The Fruit ‘n' Veg Fundraiser is designed to replace less healthy chocolate and doughnut drives that are not in keeping with a healthy whole school policy.

Parents can enjoy the convenience of fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, boxed and ready for collection from the school, at a price that offers real value for money. There are four boxes to choose from ranging in price from $20 – $30 depending on which box is ordered, with $5 from each box sold retained by the school.

All boxes contain the freshest, seasonal fruits and vegetables at a fantastic price! In fact, on the week tested, the prices were 19 – 33% cheaper than buying the same produce from the supermarket, even with the school profit. See the table below for more information.

Please note that Cancer Council does not profit from this initiative. Cancer Council has launched this fundraiser to encourage families to eat more fruit and vegetables. This is because many cancers could be prevented if people ate better, including eating more fruit and vegetables, and maintained their weight. The mission of Cancer Council is to defeat cancer.

Use the Fruit ‘n’ Veg Fundraiser all year around!

This fundraiser is designed to be used all year round instead of a one-off drive. This means that the cumulative fundraising soon adds up! The health advantages of using this fundraiser are clear, but in addition, parents are spending money on food items that they will already be buying (but through the school and not the supermarket) and are not left buying any of the left over chocolate or doughnuts that their child did not sell.

How much money can the school expect to raise?
The school makes a $5 on each box sold. If your school orders 50 boxes each week for 40 weeks of the school year, then your school will make $10,000 profit!

Since the launch of this initiative in September 2008, more than 60 schools are now ordering the boxes netting a combined total profit of over $31,450.

Testimonials

“Our school has made more than $800 from sales in the past 3 months” - Principal, New Lambton South Primary School

“The Fruit ‘n’ Veg Fundraiser is a good alternative to unhealthy fundraisers like chocolate and doughnut drives… It’s hard enough anyway to get children to eat less junk food, without asking them to sell it as a fundraiser as well”. -Carly, school staff

“We support the Cancer Council every way we can. Our family has had dealings with cancer so we know what people go through.  It’s great we can see the school benefit from it and we do too.” - Rod, grandfather

“The produce is good quality and lasts a long time. I’ve been telling everyone that they are really good value”. - Kelly, parent

“The Fruit ‘n’ Veg boxes are convenient and make us eat a lot more fruit and vegies. They are excellent value too. It’s definitely made a difference to my weekly food budget”. – Betty, teacher

“We can’t go past the value and how fresh everything is” – Bev, school staff

Where does the produce come from?

John Rarity Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables is our supplier. John Rarity Wholesale is now the largest supplier in the Hunter region and buys from Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane markets.

Sourcing from all three markets enables them to have the best of all seasonal produce making sure all boxes are full of fabulous items so that families will have a great selection of good quality produce.

Reusing cardboard boxes

We request that all families who order the boxes return their cardboard box to the school for pick up by the driver when they next deliver.

We need to reuse the boxes to keep costs down as well as help the environment. Each box costs approximately $3.00 and is able to be re-used many times.

The cost of the boxes has proven more expensive than we anticipated and we are not able to order any more of them. Therefore please help us to keep our prices low, as well as helping the environment, by returning your box to the school every week.

If it is convenient for you, you may like to bring your own bags and transfer the produce into your bags (leaving the box at the school).

You may wish to encourage other families to return their box by using the attached sheet. Otherwise we have found word of mouth to be quite effective in encouraging families to return the boxes!

Other resources you will find in the boxes

Recipe Cards

Each week you will find a different recipe card in your box which corresponds to one of the items in your box. For example, the Creamy Vegie Soup card may appear when there is a cauliflower in the box. Helpful information about fruit and veg is printed on the reverse side of the recipe card.

Which Box Should I Buy Resource?

Sometimes we get feedback from parents saying that they don’t want to order the box as it contains more fruit and veg than their family would eat in a week. In the Hunter we know that most families don’t eat enough vegies and many don’t eat enough fruit. We also know that this needs to change to help beat some cancers, obesity and other diseases such as heart disease.

This is why we have developed the following resource to help families to decide which size box they should aim to buy, depending on the size of their family. We hope you find it useful.
